Parabens: Are they in your anti-aging cream?

"Hey Informed Beauty!" There is a potentially dangerous chemical that may be lurking in your anti-aging cream. In fact, it's hard to find lotions, cosmetics, sun block, and many other beauty products that don't contain this chemical.

What is this harmful chemical?

Parabens. Not only are parabens toxic, but they can also actually speed up the aging process in the skin.

Parabens are a group of chemicals included in the manufacturing of anti-aging cream and other beauty products because they help to inhibit bacteria growth in the product, thus lengthening their shelf life. If the list of ingredients on your anti-aging cream includes the terms propylparaben, methylparaben, ethylparaben, or butylparaben, your cream has parabens.

Although these chemicals do have a preservative effect on the anti-aging cream, they have the opposite effect on your skin and body causing premature aging and sagging of your skin.

The first concern with parabens is that they are absorbed by the skin into the body. For instance, when you apply an anti-aging product containing parabens, the parabens are absorbed into your skin and accumulate in your body tissues.

The breast tissue is of most concern since the majority of the people using cosmetics and anti-aging products are women. Although no firm connections have been made, an article in the May 2004 issue of the Journal of Applied Toxicology indicates parabens were found in each of 20 samples taken from human breast tumors. This is especially alarming since the parabens can mimic estrogen, a hormone that drives the growth of breast tumors in humans as stated in the article.

Greetings! October! Unbelievable isn't it? The weather has blessed us with enjoyable temperatures, but according to the number of "sniffles and lethargy" in our team's chairs this past month, lack of immunity and colds are testimony of needing to prep our "Beautiful Health" for Autumn.

I thought it would be interesting to look at this in a Chinese Medicine perspective! (Don't forget to grab our Kasia Tips below) Enjoy!

Seasonal Balance: Autumn Health and Immunity Tips

Things begin to fall and mature in autumn. TCM believes that autumn correlates with the lung system, which dominates the skin, respiration, body fluids metabolism, blood circulation, immunity and melancholy emotion.

In Autumn, TCM holds that everything needs to turn inwards so as to prepare for the harsh winter. Foods are important to ensure that the body adjusts to the changing seasons. The dry weather usually causes an itchy throat, a dry nose, chapped lips, rough skin, hair loss and dry stools. We need to eat to promote the production of body fluids and their lubricating effects throughout the body.

It is advisable to eat more food with sour flavors and reduce pungent flavors as such things like onion, ginger and peppers induce perspiration, while sour foods like pineapple, apple, grapefruit and lemon have astringent properties and thus prevent the loss of body fluids.

The Seasons, Stress, and Colds and Flu

Seasonal change, like any change, can cause stress. The main cause of stress in TCM is Wind. Wind is said to be the " agent of 10,000 diseases, " Wind is understood to be not just the movement of air, but also, any sudden change. TCM has known for thousands of years that stress can cause sickness, and modern research has certainly proved this.

Kasia helps you create a routine to combat autumn stresses and void of colds lethargic energy!

The Consequences of Not Adapting to Autumn

* Immediately: Injury to the Lung and Immune System.

* Later: In the winter, metabolic and digestive problems including diarrhea and undigested food.

Fall seasonal diet additions advised by TCM: Cool & sour foods: sesame, honey, dairy products, pineapple, pear, sugar cane, lily, banana and white fungus.

Goal setting and your skin

Sure - Goal setting is pivotal in current time fiscal responsibility- but it is alsoan interesting idea in relation to skin care.

Really?  How does one set skin care goals?

Let’s answer this question with these three questions:

1.     Am I happy how my skin looks right now?

2.     Are there any skin issues I would like to resolve?

3.     In 3 years – how do I want my skin to look?

Of course the obvious answer is "fabulous" if you already have a great thing going your statement is "I want to look the same in 5 years time as I do now. "

What are realistic goals and how do you support them?

They may well be but does the skin care you are currently using support the goal you have identified? If you are unsure, the next step is to find out. How? Well there are a number of things you can do:

1.  Critique your skin care products- sit down with all the products you use regularly and read the labels.   Does the label even indicate what the product does? What are the ingredients?  Do the ingredients include the “Toxic 10?”

2.   If you don't know or can't work out how your skin care is supporting your goals, we would love to offer you a FREE consultation with our Kasia skin care specialist.

3.     If your current skin care regimen is congruent with your goals – great!  If not, then make the change with time to products that support and work with your skin. Remember consistency is key – combined with your product ingredient makeup.

4.     Don’t forget great nutrition!

With just a few minutes a day and these three simple steps you can improve your skin's tone, texture, clarity and function for a smooth, soft and radiantly healthy complexion.

Face-Mapping to Internal Associated Organs

As a guide, go over each zone of the face and look for any changes in colour (from your normal skin tone), deep lines (that aren’t part of the normal aging process), congestion (pimples, blackheads, milia, whiteheads) or puffiness.

Below is a guide to the key areas of the face and their associated organs. Included are key indications about lines and colours that provide additional information.

In descending order down the forehead: Bladder, Large Intestine, Small Intestine.

Usually lines across the forehead reflect an imbalance. Congestion or acne in this area represents digestive congestion and possibly poor detoxification. Red and dry or flaky skin is an indication of lack of fluids in the digestive tract.

Between the Eyes

This is the liver zone. A red patch between the eyes is a possible indication of poor liver detoxification and even heavy metal toxicity (particularly mercury). Vertical lines in this zone indicate Liver imbalance.

Under the Eyes

The top of the eye and directly below the eyes is the kidney zone. Puffiness and fluid retention in this area is a sign the body is holding on to too much fluid (watery and swollen with a blue tinge) or is mucus congested (fatty and swollen with a yellow tinge). Salt intake should be monitored, as should excessive sugary drinks such as fruit juice and soft drink. To reduce mucus congestion, reduce fat and dairy consumption. Blue circles or white under the eyes indicates tiredness or even exhaustion. A yellow tinge shows the liver and gallbladder are working too hard.

Dry, flaky or red skin in the creases above the eye shows liver stress.

The Nose

The nose tip corresponds to the lungs while the bridge reflects the health of the stomach. Congestion in the form of blackheads usually represents poor stomach digestion and possibly low hydrochloric acid levels.If the nose is red or has broken capillaries, this usually indicates excessive intake of heating liquids including alcohol, coffee and tea.

The Cheeks

Represent the respiratory & circulatory systems. Pimples or congestion in this area are often the result of a high fat and mucus forming diet (simple sugar, dairy and processed foods).Pale cheeks may be a sign of low iron levels whereas overly flushed cheeks show poor circulation and the consumption of too many hot foods such as alcohol, coffee and spices and poor elimination. A greenish tinge indicates liver congestion.

The Mouth

Generally represents the digestive function. White or very pale lips may indicate low iron levels and poor circulation. Dry flaky skin or wrinkles can indicate dehydration. Cracks or sores in the corners of the mouth are signs of low B vitamin or iron levels. Red, hot or bleeding gums are a sign of a hot or over-acidic stomach and so animal fats, simple sugars and heating food & drink needs to be avoided.

The Chin Corresponds to the kidneys and digestive system. Once again congestion in this area can be a sign of a diet high in processed foods, sugars and fats. It can also indicate unbalanced kidney function, which is usually the result of pushing the body by working too hard, stress or going beyond normal physical endurance.

The Jaw and under the jaw line Often a hormonal influence, particularly if worsens in accordance with monthly cycles. Cysts rather than pimples may indicate lymphatic toxicity, which may result from medications, environmental toxins or a highly processed and sugar rich diet.

Kasia Beautiful Health Skin Care is made of pure and nutritious  ingredients. Our unique formulations contain no questionable ingredients.

Underlying cause of bags and dark circles and.. what causes wrinkles?

Mr. Golden Sun and Mr. Pollute, what have you done for me lately?

Research suggests that the sun is what causes wrinkles and 80% of all of the signs of aging and the other 20% of the signs of aging are caused by toxins and environmental damage.

Free of artificial preservatives, parabens, or other harfmul ingredients, Kasia onCure takes the efficient, but safe approach to treating under-eye wrinkles and the other signs of aging.

The eye area is one of the first regions of the face to show the signs of ageing. The skin around the eyes is deprived of oil glands and is very delicate and that’s why the skin doesn’t have a protection against the environments influences and UV rays.

Other underlying cause of bags and dark circles is poorly circulating fluids due to weakening capillaries.  You can improve the strength of those capillaries, with the right nutrients internally, as well as applied directly in order to quickly get rid of wrinkles, bags and circles.

There is More!

To get rid of eye wrinkles, you also need to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.  Kasia onCure delivers amino acid protein peptides that have been proven scientifically to help you do just that.

Kasia OnCure Eye Cream

Benefits:

* Reduces dark circles, shadows and fine lines. * Prevents puffiness and reduces eye bags. * Reinforces firmness and tone.

Beneficial Ingredients

Prunus Armeniaca (apricot) Kernel Oil

Commonly referred to as Apricot Kernel Oil, this oil is pressed from the kernels of the Apricot fruit. It is rich in essential fatty acids, which are vital components of the human organism. As a result, this nourishing oil helps to replenish and rebuild the skin

Borago Officinalis (borage) Seed Oil

Used to prevent aging and wrinkles by fighting dehydration and the loss of skin elasticity. Borage also stimulates skin cell regeneration and rejuvenation, and is rich in minerals and linoleic acid.

Butyrospermum Parkii (shea) Butter

Kasia chooses shea butter for it’s unique fatty acid profile, which gives the ability to moisturize and retain the elasticity of the skin.

Chrysin

Chrysin is a naturally occurring flavone, extracted from the blue passion flower.  It promotes the elimination of blood originating pigments from under the eyes. Chrysin eliminates the by-products of hemoglobin degradation, which aids in reducing the appearance of dark under eye circles.

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3

Kasia trusts this protein will bring direct action to noticeably reduce under eye puffiness in four weeks. This product is clinically proven to help correct poor drainage by increasing the lymphatic exchange and achieving proper circulation of the extra cellular fluids. This powerful peptide counteracts skin slackening, perking up and increasing the firmness of the fragile skin area around the eye.

It also decreases irritation that could lead to puffiness.

he skin around the eyes is very delicate and sensitive, and that’s why you should use special eye creams or gels that are specifically made for the delicate eye area. Most of them contain ingredients that relax the muscles, vitamins, retinol and collagen.

Other tips for treating wrinkles

* Always apply sunscreen, especially during the summer months

* Avoid using creamy eye shadows- they may seep into your fine lines and accentuate them even more

* Get plenty of sleep

* Drink lots of water, at least 1.5 liter

* Wear hats and black sunglasses especially during the summer

* Avoid smoking – it makes you squint and deprive your skin from “air”

* Take vitamins and eat lots of vegetables and fruits

Kasia fit right in with the changes I have been making in my life over the past few years to put better things both in and on my body.  The fact that Kasia skin care was so "clean" was a big deal to me, but the way the product worked sealed the deal for me!  I started with the eye cream as I have always had dark circles under my eyes and was not happy with how deep my "smile lines" were at my eyes.  In a matter of a couple of weeks the dark circles were gone!

I am still on my first bottle (very economical!!) and I have noticed that my "smile lines" are not as deep as they once were!  I have recommended this fabulous eye cream to many of my friends after the great results I have seen using it twice a day!

Let's step into some "Functional Medicine/Beauty" and get to the ROOT of  Clearing Skin Disorders Naturally

Key points

1. The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body.

2. Heredity, diet, toxins, and allergen factors involved.

3. Detoxification is essential for people with skin disorders. The liver is the major organ involved.

4. Proper balance of the liver, lungs, kidneys, and digestive system maintains healthy skin.

Natural Acne Solutions

4. Silica

5. Pantothenic acid 250-1000 mg

6. Zinc 30-60 mg

Eczema

1. Inflammatory skin reaction characterized by itching, redness, blisters, or dryness.

2. A sign of toxins from inside your body. Treating with creams is not addressing the root causes of toxicity.

3. Detoxify to expel the toxins, thus preventing the problem from returning.

4. Homeopathic remedies: Silica, Sulphur, Graphites, Psorinum

5. Dietary factors/allergens common

Psoriasis

1. Auto-immune, inflammatory skin condition. Caused by faulty immune system which over-reacts and

accelerates the growth of skin cells. Normally skin cells mature and are shed every 30 days. In psoriasis,

skin cells mature in 3 to 6 days, and pile up.

2. There are five types. Some get a related form called “psoriatic arthritis,” of the joints.

3. Plaque psoriasis is the most common type. It appears as patches of raised, reddish skin covered by silvery-white scale. These patches, or plaques, frequently form on the elbows, knees, lower back, and scalp.

Dry Skin and Dandruff

1. Water: 8-12 glasses pure

2. EFA’s: Flax seed oil, Cod liver oil, fatty fish

3. Use filter in shower to reduce chlorine

4. Minerals: sodium (sea salt/ Nat Mur) and potassium

5. Sugar is a culprit so need to eliminate. Also need to increase B-complex

6. Gall Bladder? Liver? Candida?

Atopic Eczema

Atopic eczema is associated with a genetic predisposition to non-regulation and imbalance of the immune system. People with atopic allergies lack cellular immune defences (TH1) and have too many humoral immune defences (TH2). The cause of this is most likely to be environmental stress – poor diet, pollution etc. Excessive cleanliness is also cited as a cause of atopic disease – this cause is known as 'The Hygiene Hypothesis'. The goal for treatment, therefore, is to rebalance the immune system to have an equal strength of TH1 and TH2 defences. Treatment possibilities include:

• Correcting faulty digestion;

• Increasing the ratio of omega-3 fats in our diets;

• Boosting glutathione and antioxidant levels. Glutathione is the most important antioxidant. Others include selenium, vitamin E, alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and NAC (N-Acetylcysteine).

• Checking for low stomach hydrochloric acid. Supplementing Betaine Hydrochloride;

• Supplementing  Probiotics

• Supplementing with vitamins, herbs and minerals, including magnesium, zinc, iron, manganese calcium, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and B-vitamins especially B6;

• Increasing intake of monunsaturated fats: found mainly in nuts and olive oil;

• Reducing numbers of yeasts and bacteria on the skin and in the body;

• Exposure to moderate UVA: sunlight improves atopic eczema;

• Increasing exercise: this balances the immune response, gets oxygenated blood flowing, and improves appetite, digestion, sleep and endorphin release;

• Controlling stress: stress exhausts the hormonal system, causing worsening atopic systems. The adrenal gland releases cortisol when the body is under stress, overworking the endocrine system.
