Could your hair color be deathly?

This recent story was shared by a client and about floored me!  Take a read, and beware of the "marketing ammonia free/organic color green washing" out and in full force.    I have researched and sampled most, if not all of them, and we stand by our dedication to allergy free and safe hair color.

In a world where we get bombarded with chemicals everyday it is important to stay vigilant against the dangers they impose. We at Health Freedoms hope you stay alert; We hope you tell your friends to stay alert and most of all we hope you teach your children to stay alert. The following article is horrifying not just because a common chemical in hair dye is killing people but because no one is doing anything about.

~Health Freedoms

A 38-year-old woman from Keighley, West Yorkshire was in a coma last week following a suspected allergic reaction to a home hair dye. Doctors have given Julie McCabe, who coloured her hair with L’Oréal Preference colourant three weeks ago, an 8% chance of survival with little chance of a full recovery.

McCabe’s case is the latest in a series of recent news reports linking the use of hair colourant to serious anaphylactic reactions. Anaphalactic reactions can be fatal. Less than a month ago, teenager Tabatha McCourt collapsed and died following what is believed to be an extreme reaction to a home hair dye kit she’d used just 20 minutes before.

The chemical culprit is widely believed to be p-Phenylenediamine (PPD), an organic compound used in over 99% of all permanent hair dyes, as well as in a variety of other applications, such as permanent makeup, black clothing and even newsprint (it is illegal in all other cosmetic products, so black eyeliners, mascaras and so on, are always PPD free). A known irritant, PPD allergies have the potential to affect 1.5% of the population.

In February, I was admitted to hospital after dying my hair. I had begun to feel unwell minutes after leaving the hairdresser and 10 minutes later was covered in large red welts, with very swollen limbs and extremities and a great deal of difficulty breathing. An ambulance was called and paramedics spent half an hour trying to stabilise me, while I suffered a serious fit. The hospital’s doctors told me they had almost certainly saved my life. Everything pointed towards PPD as the likely aggressor. I have now stopped using permanent colourant. But in Britain alone hair dye is still used 100m times a year (60% of these in the home). So why is something as potentially dangerous as PPD still so ubiquitous.

PPD is the most effective known method of covering grey hair and, currently, there are no approved alternatives. Market leading brands such as Clairol, Avon and L’Oréal seem in no rush to find replacements to the ingredient while smaller companies don’t have the necessary resources without their support. Some temporary colourants (lasting for six to eight washes and not covering grey) are PPD free, but virtually all semi-permanent and permanent colourants contain the ingredient. Even those without PPD are almost certain to contain “PTD”, a compound so similar that those allergic to the former will almost always be allergic to that too (and which needs to be used in around double the quantities of PPD).

The Cosmetic, Toiletries and Perfumery Association (CTPA) claims that only a tiny percentage of the population has the potential to develop an allergy to PPD, but an article in the British Medical Journal in 2007 called for more investigation into the safety of hair dyes after an increase in allergic reactions in recent years. The EU has recently reduced legal PPD levels (despite some recent newspaper reports to the contrary, no European countries have a PPD ban in place, nor does the US), to a maximum of 2% when the mixed dye is applied to the hair (in general, the darker the colour – in my case a deep brown, the more PPD a dye will contain).

Many women might assume that “natural”, “organic” and “eco” hair dyes are PPD-free, but this is rarely the case.

Hormonal Imbalances Related to Acne

Acne

Acne is associated with genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, a junk food diet, and emotional problems.   It is associated with excess secretion of the sebaceous glands, which secrete an oil (sebum) to prevent aging.  Testosterone, a major male hormone also present in women, stimulates secretion of this oil during puberty.   In acne prone individuals, excess sebum accumulates in skin follicles and feeds the always-present bacteria.  As the oil breaks down into fatty acids, the cells lining the follicles stick together causing clogged pores impacted with dead cells.  This leads to whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and cysts.  First, let’s summarize causes.  I will skip the genes.  Everyone has them.  If you have acne genes, then you are predisposed to acne but that doesn’t mean you have to get it.

Hormonal Imbalances Related to Acne

Low thyroid function is a primary causal factor in acne.  Why?  Because when thyroid hormone is deficient, the body cannot convert cholesterol to the anti-aging steroids, including pregnenolone, progesterone and DHEA.  Of these, progesterone is the most important hormone in the prevention and cure of acne.  It inhibits both estrogen and testosterone. Although progesterone is the major female hormone, it is also helpful for males with acne.  Dr Raymond Peat has a cream containing 3% progesterone, which is useful in this purpose.  Peat reports his studies using dissolved progesterone on both females and males.  Both experienced a regression of their acne.  Peat says that his clients consistently reported that the use of progesterone at the first sign of a pimple stopped the development and prevented the outbreak, and within a few days resulted in a relatively clear skin.  In males, this progesterone support is important because it inhibits the excessive testosterone present in male (and some female) acne sufferers.  However, I must caution males to not inhibit their testosterone to the extent that they lose their whiskers and libido!

Why is the thyroid hormone so important in acne?  Because the thyroid hormone along with adequate vitamin A works by ensuring progesterone formation, providing you have adequate LDL cholesterol.

Dietary Factors

Please read the  dietary rules list and avoid a junk food diet.  This includes all processed, refined, junk foods and non-foods such as all commercial dairy, meat, poultry and eggs.  Sometimes, just avoiding junk and processed foods is enough.  But, if you have hormonal problems, changing your diet will not be sufficient.

There are many nutrients important in preventing skin conditions.  Instead of taking megadoses of synthetic vitamins and minerals, why not eat an organic, whole foods diet?  This will supply you with adequate amounts of B-vitamins, minerals, including zinc, folic acid and the entire B complex including biotin, and the fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A and E, both of which are very important in skin health.

Friendly bowel bacteria are called probiotics and have many beneficial functions in the intestinal tract.  Among them are Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bifidus, and Streptococcus faecium.  These are not enzymes but they help the body produce enzymes such as protease, lipase, and lactase, B vitamins, and natural antibiotics, which inhibit at least 27 types of pathogenic bacteria.  They thus aid healing of skin diseases including acne.

Emotional Problems

Severe emotional problems suppress the immune system, reduce thyroid function, and contribute to all problems, including acne.  I am listing these problems here so as not to negate the importance of emotional health and realizing when there are emotional problems that need to be resolved.

Below is a general program for acne sufferers.

Nutritional Program for Acne Sufferers

  • Eat a whole, organic food diet.  Avoid processed, synthetic foods.  This includes all refined sugars, grains, processed foods and junk foods.
  • Use a multiple digestive formula to facilitate digestion of your foods.  Find out what you have trouble digesting and minimize it.
  • Check your thyroid function.  If you have a sluggish thyroid gland, you are a candidate for acne (and a lot of other health problems).
  • Women should use Peat’s 10% progesterone oil.  Men should use the 3% progesterone cream.  Refer to the chapter on anti-aging steroids for more details.
  • Use topical creams.  These include:  natural progesterone in vitamin E, retinyl palmitate and creams containing salicylic acid (active ingredient in aspirin) and alpha-hydroxy acid (glycolic acid).
  • Premier Research Labs supplements are an option for malnutrition and balancing the body.

Compare your effectiveness and costs of  iGrow to other options and see HOW iGROW WORKS HERE!

Can in-home laser treatment stop hair from thinning?

Do you like what you're looking at when you see yourself in the mirror? Most of us can find a thing or two to change: maybe lose a few pounds, or try to make the wrinkles go away. But one thing that a shocking number of people see in the mirror is the sight of their hair thinning.

Even if you've got a full head of hair now, the odds are that your hair may thin. Male pattern baldness accounts for 95 percent of hair loss in men and two-thirds of men will see some degree of hair loss by age 35, according to the American Hair Loss Association. About one-quarter of men who suffer from male pattern baldness start the process before they turn 21 years old.

Just because hair loss is something that most men go through - and an alarming number of women as well - that doesn't mean that you have to accept it.

There are countless shampoos and topical solutions that are designed to treat hair loss, but they aren't necessarily clinical-strength products, not all guarantee results, and not all of them protect you from painful or embarrassing side effects. Reversing and stopping hair loss requires an innovative approach.

A new technology that both men and women are drawn to is one that uses a combination of low-level lasers and LED lights, and has revolutionized hair rejuvenation. Low-level laser therapy has been shown to stop the appearance of hair loss and help rejuvenate hair for anyone with genetic forms of hair loss, such as male/female pattern baldness. Studies proved that hair

responds best to red light in the 650 to 670 nanometer wavelength range, and tests have shown that pulsing light can enhance the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy.

A technology that was once available only in a doctor's office can now be used in the comfort of your home with the iGrow, the world's most advanced hands-free, laser hair-rejuvenation system.  The iGrow, which costs $695,  can help you attain thicker, fuller hair almost effortlessly, right at home, thanks to improved technology, which made this affordable and practical solution possible.

How it works

With regular use of iGrow, individuals can expect to see an improvement in hair condition within a 12-week period. For best results, the iGrow should be used 2 or 3 times per week on non- consecutive days; consistent use provides optimum results.

Results from using the iGrow are rapid and substantial. According to Lorrie Klein, MD: "The average patient using iGrow will first begin to see decreased hair loss in about 6 to 8 weeks.  Then, within a few short months, their hair should begin looking thicker, fuller and healthier. At about the nine-month mark, they'll see the maximum result and then, with continued use of the iGrow, should be able to maintain those results."

At-home convenience

With hands-free operation, you can use the computer, listen to music or read while the iGrow provides an effective laser therapy session. The iGrow has built-in headphones that make it compatible with an iPod or MP3 player.

Works for women too

Results of a study by hair-loss specialist Ted Daley, MD, show a significant number of females suffering from female pattern hair loss showed moderate to significant improvement following 16 weeks of low-level laser therapy.

A cost-effective alternative

If you use shampoos or other topical treatments, you may spend upwards of $500 per year – or more. Laser combs or brushes can range between $300 and $800, but aren't hands free, aren't programmed for women and men, and aren't as powerful as the iGrow. Treatment in a laser clinic will cost upwards of $4,000 annually, many times the cost of the iGrow.

Get the iGrow at Kasia Organic Salon for $695, and get the hair-loss therapy that has been scientifically tested. Plus, the iGrow comes with a 6-month, money-back guarantee and if you trade in your laser comb or brush you will receive a $100 rebate.

Is your expensive fragrance good for you?

Perfume must be the most ironic of gifts: Perfect pretty little bottles with perfect pretty little names, filled with sweet smelling petrochemicals(yes, you read right). Did you know that 95 percent of the chemicals used in perfume are derived from petroleum, many of them quite toxic? Great!

For 2010 you can give a gift that triggers delight, not rashes and asthma.

You’d think that perfume would be made from what it smells like. A scent that creates the beautiful image of lilies must be made from lilies, right? Wrong.

Modern perfumes are almost always made from synthetic fragrances that are most commonly synthesized from petroleum distillates.

In the late 19th century the first synthetic fragrance was created (from coal-tar) in a laboratory. Not only did this greatly expand the perfumer’s repertory of scents to work with, but it also democratized the availability of perfume by making it so much cheaper to produce. Very costly raw natural materials (like ambergris, musk and rare botanicals) that had been used to create luxury perfumes were now simply whipped up in the lab using dredged waste by-products of the industrial revolution.

It also allowed for the creation of scents that perfumers were unable to capture before–such as the smell of lilac and lily.

The science of fragrance is really rather mind-boggling.

The fact petrochemicals can be manipulated into rapturous scent is an illusion worthy of Houdini. But magic aside, a 1991 study performed by the EPA found that numerous potentially hazardous chemicals are commonly used in fragrance, including acetone, benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, camphor, ethanol, ethyl acetate, limonene, linalool, and methylene chloride.

According to Material Data Safety Sheets, when inhaled these chemicals can cause central nervous system disorders, dizziness, nausea, slurred speech, drowsiness, irritation to the mouth, throat, eyes, skin, and lungs, kidney damage, headache, respiratory failure, ataxia, and fatigue, among other things.

Another study found two groups of hazardous or potentially hazardous chemicals commonly used in perfumes: phthalates and synthetic musks.

Since perfumes are applied to the skin, repeated exposure of relatively concentrated doses may contribute substantially to our overall exposure to these chemicals. And because of the high-volume use of these chemicals, they have become widely distributed through both the natural and the urban environment-endangering natural ecosytems while also further increasing our exposure to them.

The FDA does little to regulate the cosmetics industry, and “fragrance” is considered a trade secret and thus ingredient disclosure is not required. Only a handful of ingredients are banned and personal care products and cosmetics do not require approval or testing before hitting the shelves.

Even so, according to the FDA fragrances are responsible for 30 percent of all allergic reactions. Many point to perfume as a very high-risk cosmetic product for those who suffer from asthma. And we always thought that perfume was supposed to make us feel good.

The good news is that there is an alternative–good old perfume made from natural materials.

You won’t find herbs, grasses, flowers and spice on any EPA lists. Not only are natural perfume ingredients more in harmony with the body, but they are, well, natural.

Kasia Organic Salon looks to offer pure and plant "fumes" into the new year.

Yerba Mate plant effects your Beautiful Health….infused Kasia Tea.

Yerba Mate is an amazing plant….infused  Fair Trade Kasia Tea.

"It is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value."

Yerba Mate is a sought after source of difficult to find important nutrients: Vitamins B-1, B-2, A, riboflavin, carotene, colin, pantothenic acid, inositol and 15 types of amino acids (F. Alikaridis 1987). It also contains significant quantities of the all important iron, potassium, and magnesium minerals, something Green Tea lacks. As noted by The Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society, "It is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value."

More about Yerba Mate

Just about everyone has felt the jittery side effects of stimulants at one time or another. Yerba mate, in contrast, appears to give your brain a boost without making you nervous. You feel alert and sharp. Interestingly, it actually works as a tonic for the central nervous system, calming the body and the mind. It has also been shown to improve mood and concentration, reduce anxiety, and prevent mental fatigue.

How it works

There are 196 chemicals in yerba mate that are active in the body including B vitamins; Vitamins A, C, and E; and the minerals calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and selenium. And mate has 11 polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants. Plus, it's high in chlorophyll, which gives it its rich green color and may offer additional antioxidant benefits.

But the most important chemical in mate is one by the name of "mateine." Mateine is a xanthine alkaloid. You might have heard of other xanthines, such as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine. Mateine appears to possess the best combination of xanthine properties. Like other xanthines, it stimulates the central nervous system, but unlike others, it doesn't appear to be addicting. Unlike caffeine, it isn't a strong diuretic, so it's much less likely to dehydrate the body.

Mistakenly, many people think of all xanthines in herbal supplements as caffeine. But whether you call it mateine or mistake it for caffeine, a cup of mate will likely give you quite a lift. For a quick comparison, 50 grams of yerba mate (a typical cup of the tea) with a typical mateine content of 1 to 1.5% by weight contains the equivalent of 500 to 750 mg of caffeine. But a typical cup of coffee contains only 80 to 175 mg of caffeine, and a cup of tea has about half that amount. Thus, we're looking at over twice the "active" ingredient. You might achieve lift off with mate, without the side effects associated with other popular stimulants.

Increased energy and fat burning

The result of the chemical combination in mate may, obviously, be a BIG increase in energy and fat burning. One of the most remarkable abilities of mate appears to be that it gives users energy without the muscle tension associated with caffeine. In fact, all xanthines, with the exception of caffeine, cause smooth muscle relaxation.

Mate may help support long-term energy by maintaining energy production with oxygen for longer periods of time, which burns more calories, improves heart efficiency, and delays buildup of endurance, robbing waste products, such as lactic acid that are created by anaerobic glycolysis (energy production without oxygen). One indicator that it is working to burn more fat is a drop in something called the respiratory quotient (RQ), which indicates a rise in the proportion of fat being oxidized or burned in the body. Science is revealing that it also helps stabilize blood sugar to potentially reduce the risk of diabetes and hypoglycemia.

Other powerful benefits

Improved sleep:

Incredibly, mate does not interfere with sleep. In fact, it improves sleep and increases rapid eye movement (REM) sleep as well as the time spent in deep sleep (delta sleep). Many people report that they require less sleep when using mate because they sleep deeper.

Digestive function and detoxification

Mate has been shown to improve digestion and repair damaged gastrointestinal tissues. It may control constipation by softening stools and stimulating intestinal contractions. Mate also may help detoxify the body by increasing water loss thru urination, digestive movements, and evacuation.

Safe for the heart

While other stimulants, like caffeine and ephedra, are feared to potentially have harmful effects on the heart, mate has been shown to actually be good for the heart. It may increase the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the heart during stress or exercise and may lower blood pressure and improve circulation in some people by relaxing blood vessels.

Immune support

Mate appears to boost immunity both by fighting infectious organisms and supporting immune cells, particularly white blood cells, in the body. Vitamins C and E, found in mate, are important for immune support. Unlike other herbs that may continuously stimulate the immune system, mate acts to balance immunity as a tonic. Saponins are also important chemicals in mate, which may be partially responsible for its immune-supporting effects.

Improve lung function Yerba mate also helps relieve allergies by stimulating the adrenal glands to produce corticosteroids, which suppress inflammation and overactive immune responses. It also opens the respiratory passages. This is good news for athletes since these benefits aid optimal breathing and get more oxygen into the body. Mate's potential to relax muscles may make it useful for asthma since it appears to dilate the bronchi (gas absorbers in your lungs).
