Estrogen Dominance is the result of excessive estrogen and progesterone deficiency. It affects about 50% of Western women. It is an epidemic of gigantic proportion. The primary causes are excessive environmental estrogen , obesity, stress, poor diet,  lack of exercise, and unopposed estrogen given as part of a hormone replacement therapy. Estrogen dominance is a major root cause of a myriad of conditions including PMS, endometriosis, cystic breast disease, PCOS, uterine fibroid, and breast cancer. Fortunately, the level of estrogen in our body can be reduced. Following the estrogen reduction protocol will go a long way to reduce the amount of estrogen in our body and curing women from the dreaded illness mentioned above.

Important Note:

In the female, a large part of the hormonal balance is controlled by the three major glands: the adrenal gland, the thyroid gland, and the ovaries. Maintaining a proper balance among these three glands  is of critical importance in any estrogen dominance recovery program. Excessive  estrogen affects both thyroid and adrenal function, and in turn, dysfunctional thyroid and adrenal fatigue makes estrogen dominance worse. They all go hand in hand. When not functioning properly, these three glands , controlling the majority of the hormones in the body,  can lead to a viscous downward cycle of hormonal imbalance. Worse yet is that conventional medicine often times are mislead into treating symptoms after symptoms without addressing the root cause. A wide variety of prescription from sleeping pills to anti-depressants are dispensed. Unfortunately, such symptom-based protocol will often make things worse instead of better.

Fact:  
Most sunscreens also contain parabens (hormone disrupters) and synthetic fragrances (contain up to 4,000 different chemicals, and can cause allergies and asthma). Extra precaution should be taken when applying chemical  sunscreens on children as they are less able to detoxify and excrete chemicals.

Can you give me some suggestions of what I may doing that is adding xenoestrogens in my life?

According to the Dartmouth University Study, plastic wrap heated in oil in a microwave oven contained 500,000 times the minimum amount of xenoestrogens needed to stimulate breast cancer cells to proliferate. Heating plastic wrap with food is very bad. Heat food in a ceramic bowl, cover it with a plate in the microwave oven. Coffee is a known phytoestrogen that exacerbates fibrocystic breast disease. Since it is a phytoestrogen, decaffeinated coffee may still be able to act as an estrogen. Laundry detergent cannot be fully rinsed out of the clothes and is absorbed through the skin. Change to health food store detergent without the alky phenols that mimic estrogen.

Anything that is put on the skin is absorbed directly into the body. Anything that is eaten is first pass metabolized by the liver. The liver can eliminate 90% of a prescription conjugated estrogen before it gets to the body. In contrast, an estrogen patch goes directly into the body bypassing the liver. Thus, the patch dose is 10 times less than the oral dose. Or put another way anything that is put on the skin is 10 times the oral dose.

Most skin creams contain methyl paraben, propyl paraben, or butyl paraben. The parabens are known xenoestrogens, and are now being investigated by the European Union as a contributor to breast cancer. Be very careful about what you put on your skin. Many of the cosmetics also contain these same preservatives as well.

Top 10 food choices + tips that encourage fat burning and weight loss.

These ten weight loss tips are important tools that according to Ayurvedic principles, help prepare the body for weightloss.

The added benefits of fat burning are huge and go way beyond losing weight!:

Fat is a calm fuel that burns slow and keeps the mood stable.

Fat burning neutralizes the disease-producing acids that are caused by stress.

Fat cells are where we store toxic heavy metals, fat soluble chemicals, pesticides, preservatives and environmental pollutants like estrogenic plastics.  When we burn our fat cells, we continually detox.

TIP 1:  GRAPEFRUIT

Grapefruit is one of nature's fat metabolizers.  They are coming into season right now, so don't miss them.  Remember the old grapefruit diets, where you ate nothing but grapefruits?  That diet had merit but it was too extreme, I suggest eating just 1 or 2 a day. They are great for breakfast as a "fast breaking" food.  Grapefruits support the momentum of burning fat that is established by having an early supper and no snacks through the night.This effect will continue through the morning as the grapefruit forces a metabolism that burns fat, stabilizes energy and balances blood sugar.  Add raw honey for maximum weight loss (see why below).

TIP 2:  RAW HONEY

Honey is another natural fat metabolizer and according to Ayurveda, honey stabilizes blood sugar.  Unlike most sweets that create highs and lows in blood sugar, honey boosts energy and reduces cravings by forcing fat metabolism and detox.  Honey allows us to maintain the basic weight balancing plan of three meals a day without snacking. For this to work however, the honey must be RAW, which means not cooked, not pasteurized and not heated.  Raw honey also scrubs toxins (ama) off the intestinal wall and fat cells.

If honey is heated for any length of time or cooked (such as in muffins, bread or desserts) it will not burn fat or detoxify toxic fat cells. The cooked honey becomes a toxic hardened material.

TIP 3:  WATER

Water is a critical tool for encouraging better fat metabolism.  A study from The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, (volume 92 number 8) showed that drinking 500 ml increased thermogenisis (heat production) by 24 percent.  This increase of metabolic activity before a meal will support more efficient digestion and fat metabolism. In Ayurveda it is recommended to drink 1-2 glasses of water 15-20 minutes before each meal. The water allows the stomach to be hydrated so it is more willing to robustly produce the hydrochloric acid (HCL) needed to digest a big meal.  HCL ensures that what enters the stomach is properly broken down and absorbed in the small intestine.

If the stomach is dry or dehydrated, it won't produce enough HCL for optimal digestion because that much-needed acid would end up burning the stomach lining.  In a future newsletter I will explain why lack of digestive acids is actually the major cause of indigestion and heart burn.

Squeeze a little fresh lemon juice in your water before a meal for an extra weight loss boost (see why below).

TIP 4:  TREAT GLUTEN INTOLERANCE - RATHER THAN AVOIDING GLUTEN

High insulin levels caused by poor diet and eating habits tell the body to store fat.  Low insulin levels are one of the major factors associated with weight loss.  Breads are usually public enemies for losing weight because of the hard to digest gluten content and their impact on insulin levels.  Many get results by avoiding breads and gluten altogether to lose weight.  This strategy treats the symptoms of gluten intolerance, but it is essential to find out why the gluten is not digested in the first place.  I will report on this in detail in a future newsletter.

TIP:  Toasting breads helps lower the impact of gluten on the digestive villi because it makes it easier to digest.

TIP 5:  SALAD DRESSING IMPROVES DIGESTION AND LOWERS INSULIN

Eating vinegar before each meal helps to balance blood sugar and lower insulin levels, which typically spike after a high starch meal according to the September 2005 issue of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The vinegar is a weak ascetic acid that fires up the digestive acids needed to break down a heavy starchy meal. The Italians often start each meal with balsamic vinegar.  If you're not a balsamic vinegar buff, just add more vinegar to your salad.

If vinegar isn't your thing, Ayurveda suggests a few simple recipes to increase HCL production in the stomach:

·         Lemon juice does basically the same thing as vinegar and makes a perfect salad dressing with raw honey.

·         Lemon juice can also be used alone, on food, or in some warm water that you sip with the meal.

·         To really boost digestive strength slice ginger root into dime size slices. Sprinkle the slices with natural salt (Himalayan, Redmond or Celtic salt) and fresh lemon juice.  Eat two before each meal.

TIP 6:  GREEN TEA

Drinking green tea with meals, as the Japanese and Chinese do, helps decrease the absorption of excess fat according to the March 2007 issue of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.  White, green and black tea regulate the enzyme lipase, which breaks down fat.  These teas have been shown to stimulate fat burning genes and aid in weight loss according to the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism in 2009.  Antioxidants in white, green and black tea also neutralize the toxic chemistry of stress. When caffeine is taken with a meal, such as green tea, the caffeine acts as a digestive stimulant and is beneficial for the efficiency of digestion.  The same caffeine on an empty stomach can be depleting to the adrenals and digestion.

TIP 7:  SPICES

A little spice with each meal can slow the absorption of white sugar and increase the amount of calories burned during each meal according to the July 2006 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Digestion.  Peppers, ginger, Turmeric, cayenne and digestive herbs like Trikatu help stimulate HCL production.

Turmeric: decreases physical pain, inflammation, cholesterol and liver ailments; increases mental clarity, intestinal health and bile flow, and fat metabolism.

TIP 8:  SIP HOT WATER

Sipping hot water every 10-15 minutes all day for two weeks acts as a digestive cleanse and a lymphatic flush. This is one of the best techniques to treat dehydration, which is a major factor in weight gain.  Dehydration triggers a survival response in the body that chemically tells the body to store fat.  Proper hydration supports the bicarbonate level just inside the stomach lining that protects it from being burned by digestive acids.  If the body is dehydrated, this water-based bicarbonate layer will dry out and the tummy will ache.  If it isn't treated soon, the stomach will soon be told to make less digestive hydrochloric acid (HCL), which means that food is no longer being properly digested.

My favorite test for dehydration:

·         Sip hot water every 10-15 minutes for just one day. If you are not craving and thirsting for more hot water by the end of the day, you are probably not dehydrated.

·         If you are dehydrated, you will crave more because the hot water will hydrate, dilate and stimulate micro-circulation and lymphatic drainage.  This will rehydrate the tissues as the body absorbs the water and you will get thirsty for more.

·         If you are thirsty for more hot water after one day - continue for 2 weeks to totally rehydrate.

·         Add a squeeze of lemon to spike the hot water every once in a while.  The lemon acts like soap to scrub the tissue and the hot water becomes the cleansing rinse.

TIP 9:  IMPROVE ELIMINATION

One of the most common reasons for weight gain is sluggish elimination. Assist with Probiotics, which helps as an intestinal cleanser and toner that flushes toxins and excess mucus off the wall of the gut.  This helps re-assimilate nutrients properly.

I also recommend that you increase fiber in your diet by eating more vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

TIP 10:  BEETS

Try to eat one fresh beet a day for the next 3 months to help thin the bile and flush the liver and gallbladder. Beets are best grated raw with lemon juice but also have benefits when eaten cooked. When the bile flows the digestive system can break down fat and neutralize digestive acids and the liver can remove toxic fat soluble chemicals.  Optimal bile flow may be the most important piece of the digestive puzzle when it comes to weight loss - so eat your beets!

Yerba Mate Digestion and detoxification….infused Kasia Tea.

"It is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value." Yerba Mate is a sought after source of difficult to find important nutrients: Vitamins B-1, B-2, A, riboflavin, carotene, colin, pantothenic acid, inositol and 15 types of amino acids (F. Alikaridis 1987). It also contains significant quantities of the all important iron, potassium, and magnesium minerals, something Green Tea lacks. As noted by The Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society, "It is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to Mate in nutritional value."

More about Yerba Mate

Just about everyone has felt the jittery side effects of stimulants at one time or another. Yerba mate, in contrast, appears to give your brain a boost without making you nervous. You feel alert and sharp. Interestingly, it actually works as a tonic for the central nervous system, calming the body and the mind. It has also been shown to improve mood and concentration, reduce anxiety, and prevent mental fatigue.

How it works

There are 196 chemicals in yerba mate that are active in the body including B vitamins; Vitamins A, C, and E; and the minerals calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and selenium. And mate has 11 polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants. Plus, it's high in chlorophyll, which gives it its rich green color and may offer additional antioxidant benefits.

But the most important chemical in mate is one by the name of "mateine." Mateine is a xanthine alkaloid. You might have heard of other xanthines, such as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine. Mateine appears to possess the best combination of xanthine properties. Like other xanthines, it stimulates the central nervous system, but unlike others, it doesn't appear to be addicting. Unlike caffeine, it isn't a strong diuretic, so it's much less likely to dehydrate the body.

Mistakenly, many people think of all xanthines in herbal supplements as caffeine. But whether you call it mateine or mistake it for caffeine, a cup of mate will likely give you quite a lift. For a quick comparison, 50 grams of yerba mate (a typical cup of the tea) with a typical mateine content of 1 to 1.5% by weight contains the equivalent of 500 to 750 mg of caffeine. But a typical cup of coffee contains only 80 to 175 mg of caffeine, and a cup of tea has about half that amount. Thus, we're looking at over twice the "active" ingredient. You might achieve lift off with mate, without the side effects associated with other popular stimulants.

Increased energy and fat burning

The result of the chemical combination in mate may, obviously, be a BIG increase in energy and fat burning. One of the most remarkable abilities of mate appears to be that it gives users energy without the muscle tension associated with caffeine. In fact, all xanthines, with the exception of caffeine, cause smooth muscle relaxation.

Mate may help support long-term energy by maintaining energy production with oxygen for longer periods of time, which burns more calories, improves heart efficiency, and delays buildup of endurance, robbing waste products, such as lactic acid that are created by anaerobic glycolysis (energy production without oxygen). One indicator that it is working to burn more fat is a drop in something called the respiratory quotient (RQ), which indicates a rise in the proportion of fat being oxidized or burned in the body. Science is revealing that it also helps stabilize blood sugar to potentially reduce the risk of diabetes and hypoglycemia.

Other powerful benefits

Improved sleep: Incredibly, mate does not interfere with sleep. In fact, it improves sleep and increases rapid eye movement (REM) sleep as well as the time spent in deep sleep (delta sleep). Many people report that they require less sleep when using mate because they sleep deeper.

Digestive function and detoxification: Mate has been shown to improve digestion and repair damaged gastrointestinal tissues. It may control constipation by softening stools and stimulating intestinal contractions. Mate also may help detoxify the body by increasing water loss thru urination, digestive movements, and evacuation.

Safe for the heart: While other stimulants, like caffeine and ephedra, are feared to potentially have harmful effects on the heart, mate has been shown to actually be good for the heart. It may increase the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the heart during stress or exercise and may lower blood pressure and improve circulation in some people by relaxing blood vessels.

Immune support: Mate appears to boost immunity both by fighting infectious organisms and supporting immune cells, particularly white blood cells, in the body. Vitamins C and E, found in mate, are important for immune support. Unlike other herbs that may continuously stimulate the immune system, mate acts to balance immunity as a tonic. Saponins are also important chemicals in mate, which may be partially responsible for its immune-supporting effects.

Improve lung function Yerba mate also helps relieve allergies by stimulating the adrenal glands to produce corticosteroids, which suppress inflammation and overactive immune responses. It also opens the respiratory passages. This is good news for athletes since these benefits aid optimal breathing and get more oxygen into the body. Mate's potential to relax muscles may make it useful for asthma since it appears to dilate the bronchi (gas absorbers in your lungs).
